New Scenery Postmark - Whale Arch, Xiaomen Islet

The Whale Arch is the most famous coastal erosion landform on Xiaomen Islet. Originally a columnar basalt cliff, the base of the cliff was undercut by waves until eventually an arch was formed. Legend has it that the arch was created when a whale ran into the cliff and knocked out a hole. Another explanation is that it acquired the name Whale Arch because it looks like a giant stranded whale.
